Saints Cornelius and Cyprian

September 16

Saints Cornelius and CyprianGracious God, Saints Cornelius and Cyprian dealt with terrible persecutions. Saint Cornelius was pope and he anguished over the sufferings of his people.  Saint Cyprian was his friend and said, “Let us relieve burdens and afflictions by mutual love.”  He ministered to the Pope by pointing out that not a single Christian had given up the Faith.  I ask these saints to pray for the relationships in my life, that we will give caring support to each other as we pass through trials.  O Lord, help us to remember that You have given friends to us as gifts, because You don’t want us to carry our crosses alone.  Thank you for these treasures!  Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, pray for us.  Amen.

Our Lady of Sorrows

September 15

Our Lady of SorrowsO Lamb of God, Mary is called Our Lady of Sorrows because her passionate love for You caused her to suffer when she watched Your enemies inflict their tortures upon You and slowly kill You.  She offered up the piercing of her heart as if her life were an altar, sacrificing her beloved Son for the salvation of the world.  Through it all, she did not feel sorry for herself nor did she complain, because she accepted her pain for our sakes, in passionate love for us.  I ask her to take my sorrows and sufferings and lift them up to You as an offering for the people in my life who need healing emotionally, physically, or spiritually.  Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.  Amen.

Saint Notburga

September 14

Saint NotburgaHeavenly Lord, Saint Notburga served as a maid for a nobleman, and then she went to work for a peasant family.  She discovered that she preferred working for the poor and devoted the rest of her life to this.  I ask her to pray for me when I have opportunities to work for those who cannot afford my services.  Help me, O God, to consider people as a higher priority than money, not basing my services on what they can pay, but on whether or not I can supply what they’re needing.  When I am the one who cannot afford others’ services, be generous with me, too, dear Lord.  Saint Notburga, pray for me.  Amen.

Saint John Chrysostom

September 13

Saint John ChrysostomAlmighty God, Saint John Chrysostom was very vocal in condemning the sinful customs of his society, earning the name “John of the Golden Tongue.”  With his powers of persuasion, he stopped immoral performances of plays.  I ask him to pray for the improvement of my own discernment regarding what plays, movies, comedy clubs, and TV shows to watch, and for my family and friends to turn away from sinful entertainment.  O Lord, bless those who choose what kinds of shows to promote and inspire them to increase the amount of wholesome shows that are available for us all to enjoy.  Saint John, pray for us.  Amen.

QUOTES by Saint John Chrysostom

For there are many who show mercy, who refuse to rob others and who are not covetous but who still may remain entangled in sins. >>

Jesus speaks here (Blessed are the merciful) not only of those who show mercy by giving worldly goods but also of those who demonstrate mercy in their actions. There are many ways to show mercy. The commandment is broad in its implications. What reward can people expect if they obey the commandment? ‘They obtain mercy.’ >>

Even if we have thousands of acts of great virtue to our credit, our confidence in being heard must be based on God’s mercy and His love for men. Even if we stand at the very summit of virtue, it is by mercy that we shall be saved. >>

God assents more when called on by ourselves than by others; and He often delays the giving, not from the wish that we should be utterly perplexed, nor to send us out with empty hands, but in order that He may become the author of greater good things to us. >>

As water extinguishes fire, so prayer extinguishes the heat of the passions. >>

God does not impede temptations. First, so that you may be convinced of your strength; secondly, that you may be humble, not proud. >>

We have found the Messiah, that is to say, the Christ.’ Notice how his (Andrew’s), words reveal what he has learned in so short a time. They show the power of the master who has convinced them of this truth. Andrew’s words reveal a soul waiting with the utmost longing for the coming of the Messiah, looking forward to his appearing from heaven, rejoicing when he does appear, and hastening to announce so great an event to others. To support one another in the things of the spirit is the true sign of good will between brothers, loving kinship and sincere affection. >>

For where God wills, nature yields. For He willed. He had the power. He descended. He redeemed. All things move in obedience to God. This day He Who is born and He Who is becomes what He is not. He is God become man, yet not departing from His Godhead. >>

Saint Eanswida

September 12

Saint Eanswida or EanswytheSweet Jesus, Saint Eanswida’s father selected a pagan prince to become her husband, but she did not want to marry him.  Faced with the task of convincing her father to change his mind without offending him, she sought Your help.  She made her request with kindness and good humor, and he granted her desire.  I ask her to pray for me when I have to give information that the hearer might not like.  Give me the words and the compassion to communicate persuasively and remove my fear of rejection.  Bless the minds of the persons I speak to; may they hear what You intend and respond as You desire.  Saint Eanswida (also known as Eanswythe), pray for us.  Amen.
