Holy God, Saint Augustine of Canterbury led a team of missionaries who converted the people of early England. He worked hard to establish in the Celtic churches liturgical practices that conformed to the Church of Rome, but he could not overcome the people’s determination to do things their own way. I ask him to pray for the people I know—including myself sometimes—who pick and choose which parts of Church teachings and rituals to follow, tossing out the ones we don’t like. Teach us the true meaning behind what we have rejected, and help us become fully united with the Church. Saint Augustine of Canterbury, pray for us. Amen.
