Saint Philip Neri

May 26

Saint-Philip-Neri.jpgSpirit of God, Saint Philip Neri was a priest whom the people nicknamed the “Saint of Joy” because You had gifted him with a special sense of humor.  His smile went with him when he visited the sick and the imprisoned, and when he served pilgrims who traveled to Rome.  I ask him to pray for my attitude.  Help me, O Lord, to get rid of fear and negativity, which are the enemies of joy and humor, and teach me how to view situations through Your eyes and discover reasons to laugh more readily.  Heal my wounds so that I may grow in humble confidence, which sets free the gift of humor within me.  Saint Philip Neri, pray for me.  Amen.

QUOTES by Saint Philip Neri

Sufferings are a kind of paradise to him who suffers them with patience, while they are a hell to him who has no patience. >>

Cheerfulness strengthens the heart and makes us persevere in a good life. Therefore the servant of God ought always to be in good spirits. >>

Saint Bede the Venerable

May 25

Saint-Bede-the-Venerable.jpgBlessed Lord, Saint Bede the Venerable combined contemplative prayer with theological studies, always hungry to discover more of the riches of the Faith.  He especially admired the spirituality of the Blessed Mother, because: “Mary attributes nothing to her own merits.  She refers all her greatness to the gift of One whose essence is power and whose nature is greatness, for He fills with greatness and strength the small and the weak who believe in Him.”  I ask Saint Bede to pray for me to become more like Mary, humble and aware of my need for You, so that I may grow in the riches of true Faith.  Saint Bede the Venerable, pray for me.  Amen.

QUOTES by Saint Bede the Venerable

He (Jesus) saw the tax collector and, because he saw him through the eyes of mercy and chose him, he said to him: Follow me. This following meant imitating the pattern of his life — not just walking after him. St. John tells us: “Whoever says he abides in Christ ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” >>

By meditating upon the incarnation, our devotion is kindled, and by remembering the example of God’s Mother, we are encouraged to lead a life of virtue. Such virtues are best achieved in the evening. We are weary after the day’s work and worn out by our distractions. The time for rest is near, and our minds are ready for contemplation. >>

On hearing Christ’s voice, we open the door to receive him, as it were, when we freely assent to his promptings and when we give ourselves over to doing what must be done. >>

Saint Simeon Stylites the Younger

May 24

Saint-Simeon-Stylites-the-Younger.jpgJesus My Lord, because of the great holiness of Saint Simeon Stylites the Younger’s prayer life, and because of his growing reputation as a healer and miracle worker, the place where he lived as a hermit became a site for many pilgrimages.  I ask him to pray for my reputation.  Help me to become someone that people seek out because they see You in me.  When they come to me in search of special favors from You, teach me to decrease so that You may increase in me.  Show me how to be a pliable instrument in Your holy hands, able to accomplish much good only because it is You who makes it happen.  Saint Simeon Stylites the Younger, pray for me.  Amen.

Saint John Baptist Dei Rossi

May 23

Saint-John-Baptist-Dei-Rossi.jpgO Father, Saint John Baptist Dei Rossi was so aware of Your love, he felt he could never do enough for You.  Though an epileptic, this priest ministered to the sick and the poor, housed the homeless with his own money, and befriended laborers in the marketplace to teach them and prepare them for the Sacraments.  He became a popular speaker for parish missions, and a confessor in great demand.  I ask him to pray for me and the others in my life who have physical ailments or other problems that could interfere with serving You.  O Lord, help us to remember that our weaknesses keep us humble.  Saint John Baptist Dei Rossi, pray for us.  Amen.

Saint Rita of Cascia

May 22

Saint-Rita-of-Cascia.jpgAlmighty Jesus, Saint Rita of Cascia had a special devotion to the Passion, because she felt unspeakable awe at what You did on the cross.  She shared in Your suffering beginning at age twelve when her parents married her to an abusive man, and so she has become the patron of impossible causes.  I ask her to pray for all my most difficult, least hopeful situations, and to hold dear in her heart, with continuous prayers, all the people I know who are in harmful, unhealthy or abusive lives. Free us all, dear Lord, from the strongholds of fear and denial that keep us from discovering Your healing love.  Saint Rita of Cascia, pray for us.  Amen.

QUOTES by Saint Rita of Cascia

Since we offend our sweet Jesus, every day, in thought, word, deed and the omission of good works, we should pray every day, and every hour of the day, and weep for our offenses against so kind and loving a Father, Master and Spouse. >>
