Saint Olympias

December 17

Saint OlympiasHoly Spirit, Saint Olympias served You as a deaconess and as a benefactor for many Church causes.  Though her husband died shortly after their wedding day, she decided to never marry again so she could devote herself to full-time ministry.  I ask her to pray for the women I know who are involved in ministry or who are being called but have not yet responded.  O Lord, bless the stewardship of their gifts and open doors of acceptance to help them carry out their apostolates.  Inspire others to recognize their value and raise them up to positions where they can best make a difference.  Saint Olympias, pray for us.  Amen.

Saint Adelaide

December 16

Saint AdelaideBeloved God, Saint Adelaide was arrested for being a Christian and kept in near-solitary confinement.  A priest rescued her by digging an underground tunnel to her cell.  He hid her in the woods and brought her food and clothing.  Though she had opportunity, she took no revenge upon her enemies.  I ask her to intercede for those who need the protection of a loving, Christian home: abused children, rejected teenage mothers, aging parents, and other lonely souls.  O Lord, remind me that I turn You away whenever I turn one of them away.  Help me to open my home and my heart to the needs of others.  Saint Adelaide, pray for us.  Amen.

Saint Nino

December 15

Saint NinoGlorious Jesus, Saint Nino was a slave who gave witness to the Faith through her piety and gift of healing.  In Your name, she cured diseases, healed a dying child, and restored the queen to good health.  She taught the king about who You are, and when he got lost on a hunting trip, he called out for Your help and You led him home.  I ask her to pray for those I know who need healing or guidance.  O Lord, reveal Yourself through miracles.  Touch wounded hearts, show us the path that leads to healing, and let no one die before they have discovered Your love and accepted Your salvation.  Saint Nino, pray for us.  Amen.

Saint John of the Cross

December 14

Saint John of the CrossHoly Spirit, Saint John of the Cross began helping Saint Teresa of Avila to reform the Carmelites shortly after his priestly ordination.  They formed a deep bond of friendship because they shared the same passion for holiness.  I ask him to pray for me to have friends with whom I can share the work of Your kingdom.  Thank You for those You have already given to me.  May we inspire each other to greater spiritual growth and trust in You.  Save us from the evil one who wants to divide us.  Help us to encourage each other through trials and sufferings with a prayerful devotion to the Cross.  Saint John, pray for us.  Amen.

QUOTES by Saint John of the Cross

Consider it the mercy of God that someone occasionally speaks a good word to you, for you deserve none. >>

The virtuous soul that is alone and without a master is like a lone burning coal; it will grow colder rather than hotter. Those who fall alone remain alone in their fall, and they value their souls little since they entrust it to themselves alone. If you do not fear falling alone, do you presume that you will rise up alone? Consider how much more can be accomplished by two together than by one alone. >>

For if I am to receive the grace and mercy which I beg of You in Your Son, take my small contribution, since You desire it, and grant me this blessing, since You also desire that. >>

It is best to learn to silence the faculties and to cause them to be still so that God may speak. >>

Contemplation is nothing else than a secret and peaceful loving inflow of God which, if not hampered, fires the soul in the spirit of love. >>

God sustains every soul and dwells in it substantially, even though it be that of the greatest sinner in the world, and this union is natural. The supernatural union exists when God’s will and the soul’s will are in conformity. Therefore, the soul rests transformed in God through love. >>

What does it profit you to give God one thing if He asks of you another? Consider what it is God wants, and then do it. >>

Saint Lucy

December 13

Saint LucyHeavenly Jesus, Saint Lucy vowed to marry only You and revealed this secret after her mother arranged a wedding to a nobleman.  When he found out, he had her arrested and tried as a Christian.  The judge sent her to a house of prostitution to desecrate her virginity, but You kept her purity intact.  You also gave her the grace to joyfully endure her tortures until she died.  I ask her intercede for the teenagers and unmarried adults in my family.  Dear Lord, help them to see their chastity as a gift to You.  I also ask her to pray for those You have chosen for a religious vocation as sisters, brothers, deacons and priests.  Help them to hear You.  Saint Lucy, pray for us.  Amen.

QUOTES by Saint Lucy

Those whose hearts are pure are the temples of the Holy Spirit. >>

No one’s body is polluted so as to endanger the soul if it has not pleased the mind. If you were to lift my hand to your idol and so make me offer against my will, I would still be guiltless in the sight of the true God, who judges according to the will and knows all things. If now, against my will, you cause me to be polluted, a twofold purity will be gloriously imputed to me. You cannot bend my will to your purpose; whatever you do to my body, that cannot happen to me. >>
